Why “Temp Services”?
If your organization or start-up is working to change the world and has temporary staffing needs, I can do it, or find the person who can.
After I graduated from college with my thrilling history degree, I signed up at something called a “temp agency” so I could work and earn money while looking for my dream job.
Have you heard of a temp agency? Or found work through one?
Temp agencies seem to have disappeared, even though many companies still have temporary needs and many workers still have temporary (and more!) solutions to offer.
Temp Agency Matchmaker
Companies who needed a person to fill in for a few days or weeks or months would contract with a temp agency and the temp agency was like a matchmaker, finding a person to do that work for the required time.
There used to be numerous temp agencies in cities and towns around the United States and a person looking for work would send in their resume, by email or FAX!, and then the temp agency would schedule a time for you to come in for a fast interview and computer skills tests.
Typing Tests
During the tests, you’d have to show how fast you could type without errors and demonstrate all your other impressive computer skills that likely had little to do with the degree that was mandatory to qualify for most of these temp jobs.
Typing was a YEAR-LONG class when I was in high school, so I was pretty fast (dramatic hair flip) and typing quickly was useful back then. My history degree, not so much.
Work Here for Two Days, There for Three Days
Temp work, obviously, was not stable, offered no benefits, and wasn’t predictable.
But it existed for years as a possible way to earn money for millions of people between full-time work.
Once registered with the temp agency, the agency found the work and then would call or email and say “I have a job at _____ for ____ days at $___/hr. Are you interested?”
If so, you’d accept. If you were not interested or available, you didn’t accept it.
The flexibility was fantastic, even though there were some agencies that looked at it unfavorably if you regularly refused assignments.
Disappearance of the Middleman
But temp agencies just don’t exist in the same easy-to-use way as they once did, and it’s frustrating from both the managerial perspective as well as for the person searching for work.
Over the past two decades, I’ve had the opportunity to work work with dozens of organizations (see a sample here), and have seen again and again that organizations very much still need to hire people for temporary work.
